DESPITE the heartbreak and frustration caused by the recent extreme weather and subsequent flooding, community spirit in Heathcote has not been diminished.<\/p>\n
Neighbours and community members have all been busy helping others.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are hearing reports from all over town of people helping each other, checking on neighbours and pitching in to help,\u201d said Community House executive officer Vicki Forde.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had some warning of the likelihood of another bad flood incident and coming so soon after the previous floods, people were more prepared.<\/p>\n
\u201cLots of friends and neighbours reached out to help those in low-lying areas to move things to higher ground beforehand and thereby minimised some of the damage.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen afterwards, they came back to see what was needed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Forde said the exact figures on how many people were impacted are still being assessed and anyone who needs help or advice should call the community house on 54332820.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can direct people to the services they need and let them know who is able to help.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd, if anyone has skills or services to offer, let us know and we can send them where they are needed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Secretary of the Heathcote Tennis Club, Vikki McNaughton, posted on Facebook saying the regular Tuesday social tennis night was cancelled.<\/p>\n
She asked members to come and help with the clean-up instead.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were overwhelmed by the response, not only from our members but from other groups as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am so touched by the generosity that exists in this community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe could not have accomplished what we did without the help of individuals, families, small businesses, our own members and other sporting clubs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe club looks amazing now and the courts are playable.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would like to offer heartfelt thanks to all who helped, especially the Heathcote Fire Brigade who brought down their tankers and hosed off the courts and fences.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a huge undertaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would also like to thank Mitre 10 for donating gloves and At The Bar Fitness & Nutrition staff and members who came to help.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat a great community we live in. We are grateful beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n
The club only lost one day of tennis and has now resumed planned social hits and scheduled competition matches.<\/p>\n
