ADVANCE Heathcote recently held a follow-up session to discuss an action plan to provide support to strengthen and build capacity within the community.<\/p>\n
It followed workshops held last October aimed at increasing participation for the many local groups struggling to find volunteers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeing reduced level of volunteering in our community,\u201d said Advance Heathcote secretary Kerstin Brauns.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf our community group committees are not supported, the groups could disappear forever.\u201d<\/p>\n
Participants at the session agreed that there is value in community groups coming together to discuss common themes.<\/p>\n
Heathcote Community House Capacity Builders lunches and Smiles Day have both helped to promote community groups and volunteering in the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cA common thread mentioned in the workshop was what a wonderful community Heathcote is,\u201d said Ms Brauns.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a great range of services with opportunities to socialise, play and contribute to the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is evidence that shows volunteering is beneficial in improving our health and happiness. It promotes community connection and builds relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n
Advance Heathcote members plan to develop a community-wide campaign to recruit volunteers across the district\u2019s community.<\/p>\n
It will also investigate training in social media skills, governance, public speaking and conflict resolution to build community capacity.<\/p>\n
\u201cAHInc is investigating ways to build capacity and strengthen our community and support groups and clubs,\u201d said Ms Brauns.<\/p>\n
