HEATHCOTE’S agricultural show society is looking for a new secretary.<\/p>\n
Society president Alan Harris said it was a fantastic opportunity for someone to become involved in the longest running community event in the district.<\/p>\n
“They’ll help keep tradition going while working with like-minded people,” he said.<\/p>\n
“There’s also the possibility of helping to grow and enhance the event.”<\/p>\n
Outgoing secretary Robyn Donovan said the role included general committee work, as well as tasks that were specific to the annual show held on Melbourne Cup Day each year.<\/p>\n
“It’s minute-taking for eight meetings per year and dealing with correspondence,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Work for show day starts in September\/October and it’s mainly organising where stallholders go and monitoring inquiries.”<\/p>\n
On show day itself, the secretary also provides a general point of contact and information from the show office.<\/p>\n
The newcomer won’t be thrown in the deep end either.<\/p>\n
“I’ll be there to mentor and assist while they learn the ropes,” Ms Donovan said.<\/p>\n
“There’s also a small honorarium for the role, which is paid quarterly.”<\/p>\n
Both Mr Harris and Ms Donovan were also keen to encourage other locals to get involved in the general committee.<\/p>\n
“We’d like more volunteers to come on board,” she said.<\/p>\n
Mr Harris wanted to see the show develop further and welcomed new ideas.<\/p>\n
“The possibilities are endless,” he said. “It doesn’t have to just be about farming.”<\/p>\n
The Heathcote Show turns 140 this year and more than than 1,250 people came through the gates last November.<\/p>\n
They enjoyed country show traditions such as art and craft displays, a large horse show and a working dog competition.<\/p>\n
These sat alongside sideshow alley, a range of free children’s activities and entertainment, ferret racing and an adrenalin-charged display of motorcycling skills.<\/p>\n
