LIONS Club member Merle Niclasen posted a heartfelt message on Facebook this week asking locals to take a virtual walk through the town to view Lions Club achievements.<\/p>\n
It came after the last club meeting where it was decided that the club would be forced to close next year if they cannot attract new members.<\/p>\n
“I wanted people to see how much exists because of the Lions Club,” she said.<\/p>\n
“The club recently celebrated 50 years in Heathcote, and it is my hope it will still be here in another 50 years.<\/p>\n
“At the south end of High Street, you will see the Lions Village.<\/p>\n
“On donated land, the club organised and funded all the units you see there.<\/p>\n
“Heading north, the bus shelters and bench seats were all donated by the Lions Club.”<\/p>\n
Ms Niclasen pointed out that most people don’t realise that the hospital helipad was also donated by the Lions Club.<\/p>\n
“When people in town asked for something for teenagers, the Lions played a major role in having the skate park built,” she said.<\/p>\n
“They also provided the exercise equipment near the tennis club.<\/p>\n
“The Heathcote market on the first Saturday of each month is organised and run by the club and the playground next door was another contribution.<\/p>\n
“And for those with furry friends, the Lions provided the gazebo and noticeboard at the dog park. “Christmas cakes and donations are given to Vinnies for their hampers each year and the club provides scholarships to the two schools in town.”<\/p>\n
Ms Niclasen hopes more community members will be able to spare a little time to join and help with activities.<\/p>\n
“We have a lot of fun and it’s a good way new people to the town can meet others.<\/p>\n
“We have two meetings each month and people are welcome to come along to see what’s involved.<\/p>\n
“It’s not a huge commitment. When I joined, I was told ‘Family first, work second, Lions third.<\/p>\n
“In other words, whatever time you can make in a month will be accepted and appreciated.”<\/p>\n
