{"id":96048,"date":"2024-06-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-22T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=96048"},"modified":"2024-06-19T17:59:40","modified_gmt":"2024-06-19T07:59:40","slug":"starting-early-with-fire-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/starting-early-with-fire-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Starting early with fire safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOLLOWING on from a visit by CFA volunteers earlier this year, Heathcote Primary School students showcased fire safety projects last week.<\/p>\n<p>CFA members attended as well as representatives from City of Greater Bendigo.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was wonderful to be invited back to the Heathcote Primary School to see the results of the children&#8217;s work regarding bushfire and home fire safety,&#8221; said community safety co-ordinator Evan Pritchard.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The CFA believes that fire education and emergency planning is crucial for survival and what better place to begin than in the home with the kids.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to see many important topics covered from home preparedness and smoke alarms to escape routes and evacuation packs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well done to all the teachers and children involved with the project and of course to Neil Munro from the CFA Education Unit for facilitating the program.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Science, technology, engineering and maths teacher David Close said the students were thrilled to be able to showcase their efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They have all put a lot of work into a diverse range of fire safety related topics,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all appreciate how much the CFA helps the community and the students have gained a greater knowledge of fire safety and the work done by the CFA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Grade Six student Ellana said she enjoyed doing something new.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Lola-PeterDuncanandC_08241.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Step-by-step: Lola and Charlotte showed CFA member Peter Duncan their computer presentation covering a wide range of fire safety measures. Photos: SANDRA JAMES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was good to do something different and it helped me to understand more about what we should do to be safe,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One important thing is to clear gutters before the fire season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The varied projects included posters, video presentations and some students made fire safety board games.<\/p>\n<p>Lola and Charlotte&#8217;s video presentation covered everything from mowing lawns, calling 000 and raking up leaves to ensuring there is a good water supply and working smoke alarms.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really good to know the CFA volunteers are there to help us,&#8221; said Charlotte.<\/p>\n<p>City of Greater Bendigo Coordinator Emergency Management and Resilience, Frances Ford, said it is important for residents of all ages to be prepared for bushfire.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_96054\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96054\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-96054\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Untitled-design-55.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Untitled-design-55.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Untitled-design-55-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Untitled-design-55-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/06\/Untitled-design-55-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-96054\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Xander developed a board game to teach others about fire safety.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were thrilled to see the diverse and creative range of projects presented by the students,&#8221; Ms Forde said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This demonstrated their knowledge of bushfires and their local environment, and how they can best prepare for an emergency.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOLLOWING on from a visit by CFA volunteers earlier this year, Heathcote Primary School students showcased fire safety projects last week.
