THE Lions Club of Heathcote held their annual changeover dinner last Friday at Heathcote Bowling Club.<\/p>\n
More than 40 people attended, including members, guests and representatives from City of Greater Bendigo.<\/p>\n
Outgoing president, Lorraine Speirs, said it had been a difficult year for the club.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, the club has made the difficult decision that unless a viable number of new members join, the club will most likely not continue past next year,” she said.<\/p>\n
“This would be a big loss to the community.<\/p>\n
“This year will see an end to an era with the Lions Club no longer organising and running the annual Christmas Carols in the Park.<\/p>\n
“It is hoped some younger members of the community will organise carols with assistance as required by the Lions Club.”<\/p>\n
Ms Speirs said the club had donated more than $40,000 to various organisations and community groups during the past year.<\/p>\n
“The club donated $18,000 to the Men’s Shed for the installation of a dust extraction system to provide a safer working environment for the many men who attend,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Donations were made to two Heathcote shools and St Peters Primary School in Bendigo.<\/p>\n
“Money has also been donated to St Vinnies to help them with increased demand in the community from people who need assistance.<\/p>\n
“The Tennis Club was flooded out twice and we were pleased to donate to help them with flood recovery.”<\/p>\n
Ms Speirs thanked club members for their support throughout her two-year term and congratulated incoming office bearers.<\/p>\n
New president Greg Speirs said he was confident the club would be able to attract new members.<\/p>\n
“I hope, being an opportunist, that at this time next year we will be celebrating another installation dinner,” he said.<\/p>\n
