AUSTRALIA – three gold, two silver<\/strong><\/p>\n

What’s on today?<\/strong><\/p>\n

MAJOR AUSTRALIAN MEDAL HOPES<\/p>\n

Aged just 14 and ranked world No.2, skateboarder Chloe Covell can become Australia’s youngest ever gold medal winner if she wins the street event in Paris.<\/p>\n

After winning two bronze and a silver medal from her previous three Olympic campaigns, Jessica Fox will chase an elusive gold in the K1 event.<\/p>\n

Already the most decorated Australian Olympian in history, Emma McKeon can add to her haul in the women’s 100m butterfly.<\/p>\n

OTHER AUSTRALIANS IN ACTION<\/p>\n

The medal hopes are on the line early for the Matildas as they take on Zambia in the women’s soccer. Both teams lost their opening pool games 3-0 and will be desperate for a win.<\/p>\n

With their male counterparts banking an opening win over Argentina, the Hockeyroos kick off their Olympic tournament against South Africa.<\/p>\n

Competing in her fourth Olympics, mountain biker Rebecca Henderson will look to recapture her 2022 form when won three World Cup races.<\/p>\n

After a shock quarter-final exit in Tokyo, Australia’s women’s sevens team have won almost every trophy on offer and take on South Africa and Britain in pool games.<\/p>\n

How the Aussies fared on Day 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOLD<\/p>\n

Ariarne Titmus (swimming – women’s 400m freestyle) – “The Terminator” left great rivals Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky in her wake in a commanding title defence.<\/p>\n

Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay – The team of Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon and Meg Harris clinched Australia’s fourth-straight Olympic title in the event, winning in Games record time.<\/p>\n

Grace Brown (cycling – women’s time trial) – The 32-year-old Brown will head into retirement later this year with a gold medal draped around her neck after dominating the competition on the rain-sodden streets of central Paris.<\/p>\n

SILVER<\/p>\n

Elijah Winnington (swimming – men’s 400m freestyle) – Germany’s Lukas Martens was a deserving winner, but no-one got as close to him as the fast-finishing Winnington.<\/p>\n

Men’s 4x100m freestyle relay – A flying Kyle Chalmers hoisted the men’s squad also including Jack Cartwright, Flynn Southam and Kai Taylor to silver behind Team USA.<\/p>\n

OTHER RESULTS<\/p>\n

The unflinching Boomers survived a fiery Spanish foul-fest to exact some Olympic revenge and notch a crucial first-up win in the basketball. Bendigo’s Dyson Daniels (13 points, seven rebounds) was effective at both ends.<\/p>\n

With three gold medals and two silver, Australia finished day one on top of the medal table courtesy of the pool haul.<\/p>\n

Chris Burton, on board Shadow Man, is in the bronze medal position after the dressage section of the three-day event at Versailles with his Australian team lying eighth overall.<\/p>\n

Blake Govers scored the only goal on the stroke of halftime as the Kookaburras won their opener 1-0 over Argentina.<\/p>\n

The Stingers overcame a COVID-disrupted preparation to post a hard-fought 7-5 women’s water polo victory over China.<\/p>\n
