{"id":96955,"date":"2024-09-27T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-26T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/?p=96955"},"modified":"2024-09-25T20:52:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T10:52:51","slug":"be-prepared-save-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mcivortimes\/news\/be-prepared-save-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Be prepared, save lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HEATHCOTE Fire Brigade members are calling on residents to start preparing their properties for the fire season.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of things residents can do to minimise the impact of bushfires and possibly save lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fire restriction period will start soon,&#8221; said 1st Lieutenant Jim Staggard &#8220;There is zero tolerance for illegal burning during the Fire Danger Period.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite frequent reminders, the brigade is frequently called out to unregistered burn-offs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/09\/HeathcoteCFA-8_30849.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"409\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteers Alastair Grant and Merv Hearne attend Sunday morning training sessions from 9am to 12pm.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To register your burn-off or campfire, call 1800 668 511 and notify your neighbours,&#8221; Mr Staggard said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It saves our members, who are all volunteers, being called out unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Another problem is fires lit by visitors who head back home at the end of the weekend thinking their fires are out.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fires can start up again, especially in windy conditions and quickly get out of hand. Always ensure fires are completely extinguished.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Leaves and debris can build up in guttering and it&#8217;s important to clear them to prevent sparks igniting in the event of a bushfire. Sparks can travel long distances.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Residents should also ensure that smoke alarms are in working order.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the community heads into the fire danger period, Mr Staggard said that the brigade is grateful for the support they receive from Bendigo Bank, Mandalay Resources and Fosterville Mine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/25\/2024\/09\/HeathcoteCFA-9_34171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Merv Hearne has been volunteering with the CFA for more than 30 years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their support helps us to purchase essentials to protect the community in the event of fires,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our busiest period is approaching, and we work in with other local brigades; Mt Camel, Mia Mia, Redesdale, Tooborac, Costerfield and Knowsley.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Plans for a new shared building with Heathcote SES are progressing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It won&#8217;t be too much longer,&#8221; said Mr Staggard. &#8220;The facility will be a state-of-the-art facility and emergency hub.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The funds have been made available through a flood and recovery grant and we are looking forward to seeing it built.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HEATHCOTE Fire Brigade members are calling on residents to start preparing their properties for the fire season.
