CFA members attended Heathcote Primary School last week for a bonfire and a fun and practical lesson in fire safety.<\/p>\n
Principal Carolyn Crowther hopes the bonfire will become an annual event.<\/p>\n
“We had a community working bee in September and part of this included collecting sticks for a bonfire,” said principal Carolyn Crowther.<\/p>\n
“It signalled the end of ‘cubby building season’ where a lot of the sticks came from.<\/p>\n
“It also helped prepare for fire and snake season by clearing the yard of logs, sticks and branches.<\/p>\n
“A CFA member and parent helped identify a good location for the bonfire prior to the working bee.<\/p>\n
“Then, last week, the weather was on our side and the bonfire could be set alight.”<\/p>\n
CFA members attended showing students the best way to prepare an area for burning off.<\/p>\n
“They wet down the area prior to lighting the fire, set the bonfire alight and stayed back to make sure the fire was completely extinguished,” said Ms Crowther.<\/p>\n
“We really appreciate their support and hope to make the working bee, the bonfire and connecting with the CFA an annual event.<\/p>\n
“We were also very grateful to McIvor Meats who donated 200 sausages for a sausage sizzle to feed the hungry worker bees.<\/p>\n
“One student exclaimed, ‘These are the best sausages ever!’ and quite a few students had thirds.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
