WHEN Laura Patterson moved to Bendigo more than 20 years ago, the commute back to Melbourne for work was a trial.<\/p>\n
After two years with the Department of Defence in Bourke Street, she realised it was time to bite the bullet and make Bendigo home.<\/p>\n
What followed was two decades of Bendigo-based business, beginning with a short time at Bendigo Bank before Laura launched her first business, Wordsmith LDP, which focused on marketing and communications.<\/p>\n
“Bendigo is absolutely the best place for women in business,” Laura says. “There is access to opportunity, huge levels of support and a ‘have a crack’ attitude that’s really entrepreneurial.”<\/p>\n
It’s also extremely inclusive, with Laura having undertaken work in a wide variety of industries \u2013 perhaps most surprisingly as a licensed firearms dealer.<\/p>\n
“I did want to grow up to be a ballerina, but here I am, working with the team at Smiths Outdoors and having an absolute blast,” Laura says.<\/p>\n
“The best part is obviously how closely I get to work with my husband, and we share the view that is: people are coming into our store to say ‘G’day’ \u2013 we should make it the best part of their day.”<\/p>\n
Smiths Outdoors opened 10 years ago and has become a strength for Bendigo’s farmers, hunters and shooters, who rely on the business for critical equipment. It is also growing in popularity with lovers of the outdoors.<\/p>\n
“We now have a great range of shoes, sleeping systems and cooking equipment, which means anyone who likes being outside can find what they need at Smiths,” Laura says.<\/p>\n
The agility of the business is at the centre of its growth.<\/p>\n
“We decided years ago not to go into competition with ourselves by having on online store,” Laura says.<\/p>\n
“We pour all of our resources into the store so when people come in, they’re not just kicking tyres, they’re getting the right fit for the job.<\/p>\n
“And we’re huge supporters of local advertising \u2013 we run newspaper ads for our special events, we have a clean and simple socials strategy, and we love radio ads for the relationship they help us build with our customers.<\/p>\n
“My number one tip for women in business would be advertise \u2013 and advertise well. There are heaps of creative businesses in Bendigo that can help you get your message through.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
