GRADE Six leaders at Heathcote Primary School were invited to co-present an hour of live radio last week with John Pearce on Phoenix FM 106.7.<\/p>\n
Two School Captains (Willow and Malachi) and four House Captains (Noah, Noah, Indie and Cailen) made their radio debut.<\/p>\n
“Students shared information about why they wanted to be a school leader and the process they followed to be elected,” said principal Carolyn Crowther.<\/p>\n
School Captain Willow said, “I had to write a speech and read it to the school.”<\/p>\n
“The kids had to vote. I wanted to take on the chance of being a school leader and be a role model.<\/p>\n
“I run assemblies, organise excursions and help kids in the yard.”<\/p>\n
When asked what she likes about HPS, Willow said, “the teachers and all of the students; they are helpful. I like the specialist classes too.”<\/p>\n
School Captain Malachi spoke about wanting to be a school leader.<\/p>\n
“Ever since I came to HPS in Grade 3, I’ve looked up to the leaders and wished I could be one myself.<\/p>\n
“My favourite subject is Garden. I like planting seeds, weeding and watering plants.<\/p>\n
“The vegies go into a cooking class as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.”<\/p>\n
Students spoke about their favourite things about HPS, highlights from their time at the school, people who inspire them and what they hope to be doing in ten years’ time.<\/p>\n
Noah ‘one’ said he liked Kitchen because we they to eat a variety of foods, learn how to use different materials and learn new things.<\/p>\n
“I also like sport.”<\/p>\n
When asked about advice for Foundation students, Cailen advised, “don’t give up on your dreams. Stick at it and if you stick at it, you’ll most likely succeed.”<\/p>\n
Indie reflected on the things she likes about HPS: “The teachers are really nice.”<\/p>\n
“Evie, the school dog, is a great contribution to the school and everyone you make friends with \u2013 they are super nice.<\/p>\n
“I want to work at a school. I want to work with kids when I’m older.”<\/p>\n
Noah ‘two’ reflected on his highlights from his time at primary school.<\/p>\n
“Making it to regionals in the school athletics was a highlight”<\/p>\n
Mandalay Resources covered the cost of transport which was provided by Blue Wren in one of their new buses.<\/p>\n
“We are very grateful to both Mandalay Resources and Blue Wren for providing transport at no cost to the school,” said Ms Crowther.<\/p>\n
When the students were offered the opportunity to return to the airwaves later in the year, the answer was a unanimous ‘Yes!’<\/p>\n
“Our school leaders did an exceptional job \u2013 they were well prepared, modelled the school values, spoke confidently and approached the opportunity with enthusiasm and a willingness to step out of their comfort zone.<\/p>\n
