SCHOOLS across the state are being encouraged to celebrate the importance of cultural diversity in education as part of this year’s Education Week, which kicks off today.<\/p>\n

Victoria has one of the most diverse populations in the world, with more than 30 per cent of residents born overseas and almost half with at least one parent born overseas.<\/p>\n

The state is home to people from over 200 countries, speaking 260 different languages and practicing 135 faiths.<\/p>\n

Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll said this rich tapestry is one of Victoria’s greatest strengths and represents a unique opportunity to harness diversity, as well as teach our children about the world.<\/p>\n

“Learning about different cultures is not just an academic exercise, (it’s) a powerful way to foster acceptance and understanding among our young people,” he said.<\/p>\n

“By integrating lessons on cultural awareness into our curriculum, we help students develop essential skills for navigating the world, learning to respect others from all walks of life.<\/p>\n

“This (isn’t) just beneficial for their school years; it prepares them for future workplaces where they can demonstrate great inclusivity and empathy.”<\/p>\n

Mr Carroll said schools can also play a critical role in standing up to racism and discrimination.<\/p>\n

“By fostering an environment where every student feels valued, respected, and heard, we can take a stand against prejudice,” he said.<\/p>\n

“This approach ensures that our schools are safe havens for all students and their families and empowers our schools to create communities that emulate these lessons learned within their walls.”<\/p>\n
