Tatiara District Council honoured its leading citizen and event of 2024 at an Australia Day ceremony at the Bordertown Oval, Bordertown on January 26.

This year’s Australia Day Award winners were Jamie Young as Tatiara Citizen of the Year and the Tatiara Community Event of the Year was the Intergenerational Art Trail Mayor Goossens said the 2025 Tatiara Australia Day Award recipients deserved recognition for the dedication with which they served their community and volunteered their time and skill to make the district an even better place to be.

“We each of us determine the community we aspire to be,” Mayor Goossens said. “Our contributions, our acts, how we invest ourselves in our community shape the place we live in and love.

“Nowhere is that more evident than in the generous contributions made by our award recipients, and the facilities and opportunities they have helped create for our community,Tatiara Citizen of the YearJamie Young Jamie has volunteered countless hours for the Mundulla Football Club, Mundulla Cricket Club, Mundulla Sport and Rec, Mundulla Primary School Governing Council, and the Bordertown Golf Club.

Whether as the Chairperson of the Governing Council for the Mundulla Primary School, or member of a sporting club, Jamie always goes above and beyond. He has volunteered his time as Secretary of the Mundulla Football Club, coached juniors at the Mundulla Football and Cricket Clubs, he looks after the clubs’ IT requirements, attends all working bees at any of the clubs he is involved in and is not only the first there and last to leave but also makes his staff and equipment available.

He has helped drive the construction of the new Mundulla changerooms, scoreboard, goal posts, nets behind the goals and the addition of the new area at the “goat shed” bar, and has been involved in the construction of the new cricket nets.

amie has also given many volunteer hours towards the extensive renovations at the Bordertown Golf Club, including a major upgrade of the men’s toilet, and completed the construction of the club’s new veranda and pergola and a new buggy shed at cost.

Jamie attended to maintenance at the Mundulla Primary School and was involved in the building upgrades for the administration building, two new classrooms and toilet blocks. He was also involved when upgrades to the school’s disabled toilet were needed, has volunteered in grounds committees and working bees, and cooked many, many BBQs to raise funds for the school.

As a volunteer and as a builder, Jamie has worked hard to improve facilities for the enjoyment of the community, football, cricket and golf club members, and Mundulla students.

He was awarded club person of the year for the Mundulla Football Club in 2022.

While the stories told of Jamie’s contributions to the clubs and school may differ, they agree on one point – Jamie goes beyond the requirements of any job or working bee to get things right and achieve the best possible outcome every time. Without his support, they would not have been able to get the job done.

Tatiara Community Event of the Year: Intergenerational Art Trail

The Intergenerational Art Trail was conducted in Bordertown during October and was a community event which involved hundreds of people from the ages of 1 to 110.

The opening of the trail was the culmination of many months of collaborative effort by community groups, local schools and pre-school, aged care residents and Council’s Walkway Gallery.

It showcased our community’s many talents and brought young and old together.

The community connections that were formed will continue long after the event.

This trail was the result of bringing many of the above groups together to build connections between the generations which may not normally interact and build relationships.
