Bringing a jazz icon to life
Fi & Frenz are returning to Mount Gambier Fringe this year with a new show – Ms Sassy, A Tribute To The Divine One, Sarah Vaughan.
The show has already received rave reviews at the Adelaide Fringe with its two sets, showcasing Sarah’s jazz music from the 1940s through to the 1980s.
Sarah Vaughan was one of the great Jazz vocalists of the 20th century.
From humble beginnings of winning competitions at the Apollo to an inductee into the Grammy Hall of Fame, she was described as ‘one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century’ and ‘the ageless voice of modern jazz’.
She began her musical journey as a pioneer in the bebop style and was described as sharp tongued and eccentric and sang with a style of her own.
“The show might not be what some people think – it is not the typical Sarah Vaughan songs,” Fiona said. “I went down a rabbit warren and read biographies and she was made to record the popular music of the time and didn’t have a choice and many of her biggest hits were songs she didn’t love. She prefers many of the songs from later in her career.”
Fi & Frenz’s core members hail from the Limestone Coast, with many years of jazz performance between them, including James Owen, Callum Unger and Marie Holmes.
Fiona has also been able to re-engage the services of Bill Harrower, a session musician with a resume that defies belief.
Bill has performed with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Liza Minelli and Tony Bennett, as well as featuring on some of John Farnham’s most iconic tracks and after joining Fi & Frenz last year, he was keen to be involved in the new show.
Join Fi and Frenz as we pay homage to amazing woman and musician, Sarah Vaughan, as they explore her life and music.
