Over the past 50 years a dedicated group of rock hounds and enthusiasts have been working together to share with and educate others about their fascinating hobby.

The Mt Gambier Gem Club began in our community in 1974. It has been a long and dedicated journey over this period of time and they have continued to share all things mineral, rock and crystal while keeping the lapidary vision active.

The Mt Gambier Gem Club has put together a wide selection of rock and mineral specimens, a photographic history of the club and further information to inspire others to begin exploring the amazing world of rocks and will be holding an exhibition to celebrate the milestone at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex.

The group is also keen to show the community other interests and hobbies by members which includes some intricate jewellery creations and finely crafted drums.

The club meets on two Saturdays each month with extra midweek workshops. Memberships are available for individuals or for the whole family. Families can learn together and unearth fascinating new interests while encountering new and inexpensive crafts.

People can learn to work with rocks, metals, shells or something entirely different. Field trips have become a regular part of the annual program, along with workshops and social events. Specimen collecting draws individuals towards a whole new world of discovery.

There are activities suitable for people with disabilities and children of school age. Our local volcanic landscape can spark an appreciation of rocks and offer opportunities to start collecting as we move further afield. The members of this hub of activity are keen to share their crafts and knowledge with the community.

The exhibition will be opened by District Council of Grant Mayor Kylie Boston on Saturday, October 5, 1pm at the Port MacDonnell Community Complex. It will remain on show until Thursday, November 28.

The public are invited to come along for afternoon tea and chat with our friendly members.
