City of Mount Gambier launches new art project
The Beacon Art Project is seeking to capture the unique combination of landscape, people and history that forms Mount Gambier’s identity and resonates with the local community and visitors to the city and it is time for artists to send in their expression of interest to be part of this ground breaking project.
They are invited to submit a design proposal for an iconic public art work within Mount Gambier’s CBD.
Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre and Cultural Development director Ashleigh Whatling said the project’s vision is to enhance vibrancy, promote cultural identity, provide a unique attraction and iconic work of art.
“We encourage submissions that creatively engage the Limestone Coast’s diverse cultural and geographic identity to deliver a significant landmark for the region,” she said. “Public art can have a transformative power in enhancing both the built and natural environment, while fostering a sense of community pride and identity.”
Materials and mediums are unrestricted for this project and artists are encouraged to consider local industry, history and geography when proposing materials.
“Artists should consider durability and low ongoing maintenance are important considerations, ensuring the longevity of the artwork for up to 30 years,” Miss Whatling said.
Consideration should be given to the potential impact on foot traffic, visibility, and the architectural and geographical context of the proposed location.
The Mount Gambier Beacon Art Project will be delivered as a two stage process.
An assessment panel comprising of representatives from the City of Mount Gambier and community members will review the Expressions of Interest, evaluating submissions based on the selection criteria.
Those artists shortlisted after that process will then be invited to submit a detailed proposal and from those presentations the final decision will be made.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 5pm on April 30 and can be sent to [email protected] or the Civic Centre, 10 Watson Terrace, Mount Gambier, SA 5290.
