Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said their goal was to craft a landmark wine to acknowledge Penfolds 180th Anniversary, the commemorative drop built on three cornerstones.

The Coonawarra Wine Region’s outstanding 2021 vintage has been highlighted in the release of Penfolds 180 year commemorative collection.

Launched by Penfolds earlier this month, the commemorative Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz 2021 has been created from some of the oldest plantings in the region with standout fruits from the 2021 vintage, namely Shiraz from Penfolds Block 5 and Cabernet Sauvignon from Penfolds Block 10.

These vines proving to be consistent contributors in the past for not only Grange, but also Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon and Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Compellingly – the lure of outstanding parcels in barrel availed from the stellar 2021 Coonawarra harvest.

Fatefully – testament to a pre-ordained and magical Australian varietal union – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Resultingly – Penfolds 2021 Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz.

Coonawarra Vignerons executive officer Hugh Koch said for Penfolds to choose only one wine region for this very special commemoration speaks enormously to Coonawarra’s reputation and the excellent 2021 Vintage.

“Coonawarra is one of Australia’s most internationally celebrated wine regions, famous for its world-class red wines,” Mr Koch said.” This ultra- premium wine release reiterates just how outstanding the 2021 Coonawarra vintage is, one of the best on record, whilst further endorsing Coonawarra’s reputation as one of the worlds most eminent wine producing region.”
