Environmental leaders in waiting

Eighteen students joined the Limestone Coast Landscape Board’s Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council program this year, and enjoyed the activities and events that connected them to nature and our local landscapes.

Landscape Education coordinator Vanessa Freebairn said the students had demonstrated a remarkable commitment to sustainability and community engagement throughout the year, collaborating closely with the community on projects that will support our environment into the future.

“This year, our students embarked on a series of exciting excursions, making the most out of every opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about our local landscape,” McFreebairn said. “The impact from increasing awareness of landscape management issues with the regions youth will have a positive and lasting impact.”.

Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council events included a camp out at Mt Burr Swamp learning about wetland restoration and how important water is for our landscape, revegetation at Marist Park, supporting the Day in the Park event, which launched the Climate Watch trail at the Valley Lakes/Ketla Malpi, and learning about soils and cultural heritage.

Colby and Maya, who have been involved in the program since its inception in 2022, this year took on a mentoring role to help inspire and support new members.

“The program has helped them gain a deeper understanding of the environmental career pathways they may wish to take and fuelled their passion for landscape management and sustainability even more,” Colby said.

Members of the LCYEC demonstrated a deep commitment to environmental stewardship by actively participating in various initiatives aimed at preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of the Limestone Coast region.

As they celebrate a year of learning, the young leaders look forward to building on these achievements and continuing their mission to inspire sustainable practices within the community.

Students in Year 7 to 10 with a passion for the environment are eligible to join the program. Most events happen during school holidays.
