Environmental project collaboration

THE Limestone Coast community has seen some amazing environmental outcomes over the past four years through Grassroots Grants funding by the Limestone Coast Landscape Board.

The grant has funded works such as plantings, nature education, citizen science, building homes for wildlife, weed and pest control, erosion management and community engagement.

With the 2024-25 projects wrapping up it is a time to celebrate what can be achieved with collaboration as well as announcing the opening of the 2025-26 grants program.

Mt Burr Trails received funding to support community planting days at the picturesque trail site. The funding assisted the volunteer organisation to work to together with local schools, increase habitat for local wildlife and create a sense of community amongst volunteers.

Judith Driver from Mt Burr Trails said the Grassroots Grants funding gave them an opportunity to work with the local community whilst increasing the habitat at the trail site.

“Students who supported the planting days also learn about the native wildlife that lives on the trails and environmental sustainability and the cultural significance of native plants,” she said.

“The planting days will focus on reintroduction of native plant species in the trails area to support biodiversity.”

Grassroots Grants funding of local volunteer groups like Mt Burr Trails means they can focus on the work on the site rather than spending time on fundraising efforts to undertake these projects.

Limestone Coast Landscape Board chair Dr. Penny Schulz said the Grassroots Grant funding program provides an opportunity for local community groups to play a significant role in the management of our local environment.

“Working collaboratively with these groups to see on ground action is extremely important for our local landscape. It is pleasing to see so many great outcomes for projects that we have funded over the years,” Dr Schulz said.
