Family friendly project to help our waterways
SOUTH Australians love their waterways, and these school holidays, families in the Limestone Coast region will have the chance to roll up their sleeves and get involved in projects that support healthy rivers, streams and the fish that call them home.
The events are hosted by OzFish–Australia’s only fishing conservation charity–who are also helping to restore South Australia’s shellfish reefs in response to the harmful algal bloom. With hands-on activities for kids and families, the aim is to show how everyone can play a role in caring for their local environment.
Eddie the Eel – Mount Gambier, Yahl and Millicent, 4, 9 and 11 October
Families can also join Eddie the Eel from Eight Mile Creek, part of the state-wide Nature Festival. Told through drawings and narration by students from Yahl Primary School, Eddie’s story explains the incredible migration of the Short-finned Eel and highlights the importance of protecting aquatic habitat. With sessions running in Mount Gambier, Yahl and Millicent, it’s a great way to learn about one of the region’s unique species.
These events promise school holiday fun with a twist–keeping kids busy, curious and outdoors, while quietly sneaking in a love for their local waterways.
