SERVICE excellence, collaboration and resilience have provided the winning-formula to claim the 2025 Glenelg Shire Council Business of the Year Award, sponsored by ACE Radio.

The Royal Hotel Portland (pictured after receiving the top award) claimed the coveted title with judges highlighting it’s revival story – a neglected venue transformed into a thriving hospitality hub during one of the most challenging economic periods.

“In 2021, during the height of the COVID pandemic, the current owners took a bold financial risk by purchasing the rundown venue. At the time, it had only five staff and minimal sales” said awards judge, Robert Lane of SED Advisory.

“Through strategic planning, local collaboration and relentless effort, they revitalized the hotel. They now boast over 40 staff from diverse backgrounds, host fundraising events and invest heavily in local sponsorships that support sports clubs and charities.

“Furthermore, the customer experience is treated as a craft, driven by owners who lead from the front. They are a fantastic example of what sustainable and people-centric business practices can achieve.”

Glenelg Shire Mayor Cr Karen Stephens praised the entire Royal Hotel team.

“The Royal Hotel are a prime example of a local business that has shown innovation and strong, creative leadership and are a well-deserving winner of this coveted title of Business of the Year,” she said.

“Alongside Royal Hotel, we are extremely proud of all our winners and finalists this evening. The Awards night was a broad reflection of the efforts of our business and tourism sector who work tirelessly to provide excellent customer service and outstanding products, shining a spotlight on our region and all that it has to offer.”

Jakobe Walker from Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation was recognised as Young Achiever of the Year, sponsored by Portland District Health, recognising a high achiever aged 25 years and younger.

Jakobe is a Ranger for the UNESCO World Heritage Budj Bim Cultural Landscape and has a passion for sharing and teaching his culture to the wider community.

He was noted by the judges for his initiative, strong work ethic and ability to inspire others, being described as “a strong Indigenous leader for his community and for future generations”.

The Portland Phone Shop’s Kaitlyn Wyckelsma was named Employee of the Year, an award sponsored by Port of Portland, and was credited for her selflessness and putting the community at the core.

She was credited for her professionalism and warmth and consistently going above and beyond. Many customers request her by name, and she often visits elderly clients after hours to resolve complex tech issues.

The awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Portland Golf Club, hosted by beloved Australian comedian, actor and radio presenter Anthony ‘Lehmo’ Lehmann and music from the acclaimed Orlando Combo Jazz Band.
