Musical talent in the spotlight
GUITAR, woodwind, brass, piano and percussion were among the instruments played at the Mount Gambier Eisteddfod Music Division last week – there were even bagpipes and a thongaphone.
The three days of competition were well attended and Sydney-based adjudicator Andrew Stokes was impressed with what was on offer from the region’s musical talent.
“I was enjoying the music so much, I wanted to jump on stage and join in,” he said. “It’s a wonderful showcase of talent. From Mozart to Metallica, there’s something for everyone.”
Major award winners were Arshia Gulati for the Peter Uylett Memorial Award for High Potential and the Lakes Rotary Blue Lake Fun Run Scholarship winners Gordon Farrugia for woodwind and brass, Elizabeth Barnett for piano, William Judd for strings and Archie Shepherd for guitar.
The Lions Club of Mount Gambier Under 12 years encouragement award went to Piper Morris and the Young Performers Scholarship went to Trae Ziakas.
