New performing arts opportunity

EMERGING and established performing artists from the Limestone Coast will have the opportunity to test new projects and works on stage as part of Test Fest, a new performing arts scratch night coming to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage on August 8.

Test Fest is a first of its kind project produced by local drag king Kyra Sykes (Loveit Murray) with support from Country Arts SA’s the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre.

The event is now open for expressions of interest where artists both established and emerging are encouraged to submit their unique act to be considered for the showcase.

All performing art practices are welcome including; dance, music, poetry, theatre, speech, drama, drag, cabaret and more.

Test Fest is part of the theatre’s Local and Live initiative which encourages events hosted by and featuring Limestone Coast based talent.

Producer and performer Kyra Sykes (they/them) said the idea for Test Fest was brought to life during a Country Arts SA performing arts residency program in late 2023.

“I was fortunate to workshop multiple ideas at the regional artists residency on Barngarla Country at Thuruna in the presence of some wonderful mentors and fellow artists, Sykes said.

“It was there I had multiple conversations about the need for a place to start as a performer in a regional community and also a space for established performers to trial new ideas or projects.

“I think it is really important to support the performers in our community and encourage getting on stage with a welcoming platform such as this.”

Kyra encourages all artists to submit an expression of interest and bring something new to the stage in the presence of a supportive audience excited about local talent.

Expressions of interest are now open and links to the form can be found on the Loveit Murray – Drag King Facebook page (pictured – PHOTO COURTESY OF TIM ROSENTHAL).

Test Fest will be held at 7pm, August 8 at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre with tickets available for purchase at countryarts.org.au
