Oscar earns a golden opportunity

IN the end, former South Gambier rising star Oscar Adams did not have to wait long for redemption.

Handed an AFL lifeline when the 21-year-old was picked up by the Gold Coast Suns in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft on May 28 this year, the 198cm defender earned a call up for his AFL debut at the weekend, taking the place of vice captain Sam Collins, who suffered a calf injury.

Adams’ AFL journey started in 2021 when he was taken by St Kilda at Pick 51 in the National Draft but after two years and no senior action, Adams was delisted, returning to SANFL club Glenelg, where he was part of the 2024 premiership.

Fast forward just over six months and Adams found himself on the big stage, taking on Essendon at Marvel Stadium, living out his AFL dream, that at times, looked over.

Adams had four kicks, five handballs, two marks and one tackle as he took what was a last minute opportunity – his elevation from emergency to the starting line-up confirmed on Friday, making for a mad dash for parents Sharon and Simon Adams, while sisters Jordyn and Siobhan already call Melbourne home.

A contingent of mates from both Mount Gambier and Adelaide also rearranged plans to be part of the milestone moment.

Adams is the second player hailing from the Limestone Coast to make his AFL debut this year after East Gambier’s Angus Clarke hit the big time for Dreamtime at the ‘G, impressing with his three goals and earning a Rising Star nomination.

Gold Coast Suns General Manager of Football Performance Wayne Campbell said Adams’ call up was well deserved.

“Oscar has impressed in such a short time at the club and it’s fantastic for him to have earned the chance to make his AFL debut,” Campbell said.
