PENOLA and Coonawarra will come alive from May 16-18 as the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival returns with a vibrant, community driven celebration of creativity, culture and connection.

From markets and music, art and activities to literary events and kids’ entertainment, this year’s festival promises something for everyone, so check out the program now live on our website.

Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival president John Mossop said festival goers would be able to find inspiration through art exhibitions, craft demonstrations, and interactive art and making workshops, offering the chance to connect with local creatives and explore new artistic horizons.

“Whether you’re a seasoned maker or just curious, there’s something to ignite your imagination,” Mr Mossop said.

Festival Friday kicks off the celebrations with a bigger event this year in the Penola Town Square featuring music, activities for the kids, food and fabulous people gathering to get the festival going.

The winner of the new Poets of Penola Acquisitive Art Prize will also be announced at the festival opening event in the new home of the Arts Festival – Still Water Studio on Penola’s main street.

Saturday night turns up the volume with the return of the much-loved Shenanigans – a high-energy music event featuring local bands, good vibes, and plenty of dancing.

Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival coordinator Peta Baverstock said this was the big night out at the festival not to miss.

“What makes it even better you can enjoy our local Coonawarra wines and fabulous food from Pipers of Penola,” she said.

Don’t miss the special Literary Brunch with acclaimed author Larry Buttrose, in conversation with journalist and writer Katie Spain about his new book and other literary endeavours.

Set in the stunning Ottelia restaurant at Coonawarra, the event offers a rare insight into Larry’s creative journey, with plenty of food for thought – and the table.

On Sunday, wander through the ever popular Down the Lane Event where local artisans, food vendors, and musicians turn historic Petticoat Lane into a buzzing creative hub.

From handmade wares to delicious bites, and more delicious Coonawarra wines, it’s a feast for the senses.

Young festivalgoers can dive into a variety of events for the kids on Sunday’s Down the Lane event with hands-on art workshops, meeting farm and bush animals, face painting, and more.

When the kids are exhausted, grab a bite to eat and a glass of wine from one of the stalls and settle in to hear live music throughout Sunday.

The Open Mic competition closes out Sunday with a competition for adults and kids alike.

Whether it’s music, comedy or any other performance, there’s great prizes up for grabs.

Down the Lane is the perfect event for a relaxed day out with friends and family under the autumn sky. Expect soulful tunes, good company, and great eats.

“On behalf of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Committee we are proud to bring people together to celebrate the incredible talent and community spirit that makes Penola and Coonawarra so unique,” Mr Mossop said. “Whether you’re 5 or 95, there’s something at this year’s Festival for you.”
