Renovations force meetings to new venue

CITY of Mount Gambier Council meetings will now be held at City Hall, instead of the Council Chambers due to ongoing maintenance delays to the Civic Centre lift.

“We have made this decision to ensure accessibility for all, which means Council meetings will be held at City Hall in the Cave Garden/Thugi until further notice,” City of Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin said.

“The only exception is the Audit and Risk Committee meeting to be held on Wednesday 4 June 2025 and Council information and briefing sessions which will be held at the ground level conference room in the Civic Centre, accessible from the Ferrers Street car park next to the Globe Hotel.”

The Civic Centre lift remains out of action due to ongoing structural engineering requirements.

“We advised the public in May last year that the lift was out of order and needed to be replaced due to its age and lack of available parts. At that time, we hoped to have a new lift installed by the end of 2024, but unfortunately there have been delays associated with engineering requirements to improve the structural integrity of the lift shaft. The lift is in transit and its arrival is anticipated to coincide with the completion of the structural works to the lift shaft later this year,” City of Mount Gambier General Manager City Infrastructure Barbara Cernovskis said.

A wheelchair lift is available to provide access to the Council office and the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre at the Civic Centre.

“If you require the lift to access the Council office, please call and speak to our customer service team on 8721 2555, as we may be able to help you with your enquiry or payment over the phone,” Ms Cernovskis said.

“We are still able to assist you at the Council office should you wish to visit us. A customer service officer will meet you on the ground level or you can call ahead to organise a time that suits you.”
