BALLINA Shire Council has introduced a new category called Local Hero for its 2025 Australia Day Awards.

The award will honour an individual who demonstrates innovation and enterprise, either through their professional career or voluntary efforts.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the new award recognises those who make significant contributions to the community in ways that might not always fit the traditional mould of voluntary service.

“It’s about shining a light on those who inspire us, often quietly and without seeking recognition, and celebrating the diverse achievements that help shape and elevate our region,” she said.

The age bracket for Young Citizen of the Year has also been lowered to under 25, while nominees for Senior Citizen of the Year must be aged over 65.

“In previous years, we found that nominees nearing 30 were often competing against much younger candidates, creating a disparity in the competition,” Cr Cadwallader said.

“Adjusting the age range ensures that the category remains relevant and acknowledges the different stages of youth and adulthood.”

Members of the community have until Monday, November 4 to nominate deserving candidates.

Other categories include Volunteer of the Year (open age), Sports Achievement (individual, team, coach, sports administrator), Arts and Culture (individual or group), Environmental Award (individual or group) and Community Event of the Year (event held during 2024), with the 2025 Ballina Shire Citizen of the Year to be chosen from nominees across all categories.

“These awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of individuals, both young and old, in our community,” Cr Cadwallader said.

“Each year, I’m amazed by the incredible work being carried out and the stories that come to light through these awards.

“It’s inspiring to see the diverse ways people are making a difference.”
