Mount Gambier Ghosts Exhibition

Riddoch staff member Melissa Horton works with paranormal specialists to investigate an oil painting of Helen Riddoch by an unknown artist.

The Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre will open the Ghosts from the Collection exhibition on Saturday 7 September 2024. Ghosts from the Collection awakens works from the Riddoch storeroom to tell their own stories and take a deeper look at what is hiding inside or behind these artworks.

“We have a great range of spooky works in the collection waiting to come into the light. From Peter Serwan’s Sunday Painter to the haunting landscape of Peter Booth, this is a must see, thrilling exhibition,” Riddoch Team Leader Exhibitions and Collections Chris Clements said.

The exhibition will be accompanied by activities including a gallery tour on Saturday 21 September at 11:00am, a school holiday screening of SCOOB! on Wednesday 2 October, a ghostly Halloween investigation with Mount Gambier Paranormal on Thursday 31 October and DIY art activities throughout the exhibition period.

“The Riddoch Collection is a great asset to the City of Mount Gambier and we’re so pleased to be able to share it with our community,” Riddoch Arts and Cultural Centre Director Ashleigh Whatling said.

“Ghosts are no stranger to the world of art. The job of painting has long been to morph the physical stuff of life and dissolve the boundary of our material and ethereal worlds, leaving many a quiet threshold for the ghost to inhabit.”

“They may be religious, mystic, supernatural, metaphorical or allegorical. They may be commemorations or other worldly visages. Whoever they are and wherever they dwell this exhibition marks their moment to shine,” Ms Whatling said.

Ghosts from the Collection opens in the King’s Floor upstairs at The Riddoch from Saturday 7 September until Sunday 1 December 2024. The centre is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm weekdays and 10:00am to 2:00pm weekends and most public holidays. Entry is free. Activity bookings and further information can be found at theriddoch.com.au
