Story of survival
Local author to unveil poetry collection at library
Mount Gambier Library is pleased to present local author Jo-ann Mckay with the launch of her collection of poetry in ‘Rise Little One, Rise’ this Wednesday at 7pm.
Joann McKay is a survivor. At the age of three years old, Joanne’s mother died, and her life suddenly and dramatically changed forever.
“After the death of my mother, I was given away, and after many years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, I became a ward of the state,” Ms Mckay said.
“I was dealt some horrific life experiences, but I needed to heal. My ambition was to publish a book about my journey through domestic violence and abuse, to find my true strong self. I chose the genre of poetry because it can say so much in such a small space”.
Written from an honest survivor’s perspective, Rise Little One, Rise, captures Joann’s unique life and healing journey.
The theme is not despair, but resilience, strength, courage, and the glowing light of hope.
“I hope that in sharing my writings, to encourage other survivors to tell their stories and a reminder to be kind to one another. A simple smile can have a positive impact and a ripple effect.”
Supporting the event, The Haven Mount Gambier; a safety hub located within the Mount Gambier Library, providing information and referrals for at risk women and children.
“Almost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner and on average, one woman a week is murdered by her current or former partner”, The Haven community partner Vivienne Jaffer said.
“Knowledge is power, you never know who may need help and knowing who to contact locally may save someone’s life.”
Agency staff will be available with advice and guidance on the night, and books available for sale and signing for $10 cash only.
