PORTLAND Secondary College has introduced a dedicated Year 7 HUB space to support student wellbeing, learning and connection – and thanks to a grant from United Way Glenelg’s Community Fund, that space now includes a fully equipped kitchenette.

The HUB is a new initiative designed to support Year 7 students as they transition to secondary school.

The space brings together a dedicated teaching team, tailored lessons and a consistent learning environment, with a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and wellbeing.

The kitchenette is a practical addition that allows students to learn life skills, access nutritious food, and build community.

Portland Secondary College principal Jo Kindred said the initiative is already delivering benefits.

“The Year 7 HUB gives our students a strong foundation for learning and connection, and the kitchenette has become a central part of that,” Ms Kindred said.

“It’s not just about food – it’s about community, healthy habits and giving our young people the tools they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.”

The kitchenette is being used to prepare snacks, role model healthy eating, and provide food for students who arrive without breakfast or lunch.

It also ties in with class projects like cooking Indonesian meals, and when the opportunity arises partner with Portland District Health and Portland Community Garden.

United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr said the project reflected what’s possible when local people give generously.

“This project shows how small investments can create meaningful change,” Ms Carr said. “By supporting the Year 7 HUB, we’re helping students build confidence, develop practical skills, and feel supported from their first year of high school.

“That’s a community win, and it’s all made possible by people giving back through workplace giving.”

United Way Glenelg’s Community Fund returns 100 per cent of funds raised to local initiatives like this one, creating opportunities for children and young people across the Glenelg Shire.
