They all started secondary school together at Mount Gambier High School and at the weekend, a small group of class mates took a walk down memory lane at their Class of ’53 reunion.

Celebrating 70 years when 79 boys and 65 girls, divided into four classes, embarked on their high school journey, it is certainly not the first time this group of friends have arranged a catch up.

It was in 1987 that a committee of eight planned a 35th anniversary celebration in 1988 – an event that was held at The Barn Palais with more than 100 students and partners, as well as around 20 staff, relishing the chance to reminisce with former school mates.

The 1953 cohort caught up again in 1993 and 1998 before taking a hiatus from celebrations until a 2013 function at East Gambier Sportsman’s Club, followed by a 2019 reunion.

Twenty-seven people attended the weekend’s Class of ’53’s sixth reunion at the Mount Gambier RSL, which included a roll call, toast to the departed, a video compiled from the previous five events and a lunch.
