As winter settles in, everyone feels the impact of the cold mornings and nights, especially older residents.

That’s why it is heartwarming to know that 200 residents have received one of the Winter Care Packages, from United Way Glenelg, designed to bring warmth to the heart, soul, and body, these packs are making a difference wherever they go.

Supported by generous donations from local organisations and individuals, this initiative aims to bring warmth and comfort to our senior residents during the colder months.

United Way Glenelg executive officer Nicole Carr expressed her appreciation for the community’s support in making this initiative possible.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by our donors and volunteers,” Ms Carr said. “These care packages not only provide essential items but also bring joy and comfort to our older residents.”

Each care package includes a hand-made quilt, non-perishable food items, and other winter essentials. This initiative is part of United Way Glenelg’s ongoing efforts to support the wellbeing of vulnerable community members.

“This year, we worked with 13 agencies and departments across the Glenelg Shire community to ensure these packs were distributed where they were most needed,” Ms Carr said. “The dedicated employees of these organisations delivered the packs to every recipient’s home.”

The response from one recipient sums up the significance of the program.

“My home care worker arrived with a parcel in his arms… a great surprise,” they said. “I was both surprised and delighted. I celebrated by sharing a quick morning snack with my worker. I am so grateful for the parcel.

“Instantly, the quilt was draped over my armchair, and I was snuggled under it, warm and with a book to read! The contents of the winter box are wonderful! I have enjoyed eating some already and have the remainder as a choice on the chilliest of days.

“Your kindness brings me gratitude, some happy tears, and such admiration for the quiltmaker and the generosity of the providers of food.

“My childhood came back to me as I picked up the Kraft cheese in the blue box… a childhood treat. I look forward to days when I choose the baked beans or spaghetti for my lunch. I will snuggle under my quilt a lot. I thank you, with tears in my eyes.”

“I recently celebrated my 76th birthday and decided to make this kind gift a birthday present, as to be truthful, there were no others.”

Without the support of the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund, All Saints Outreach, Portland Freemasons, Gwenda Matthews bequest, Portland District Health, Reader’s Digest Magazine, Julia Street Creative Space Inc, Portland Community Garden, Finlay Emporium, and the craftspeople of our community, the winter care packages wouldn’t have been possible.
