Wood Work – A Career of the Future Rooted in Sustainability
WHEN you hear the word “forestry,” what comes to mind? A female electrician working in a sawmill, processing timber frames for the construction industry? Well, yes, you would be correct!
Forestry is one of the most progressive, inclusive, and future-focused sectors in Australia today.
In 2025, forestry is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the establishment of commercial plantations – a monumental occasion that acknowledges the critical importance of the forest and timber industries, the 21,300 people working directly and indirectly in the industry, the wood fibre products it makes and the ecosystem it maintains.
Forestry strongly focusses on science, technology, and sustainability, and is about managing one of our most valuable natural resources with care, intelligence, and innovation. And more than anything, it’s about people – young professionals, apprentices, scientists, technicians, and community builders – all working together to shape a more sustainable future.
At the heart of this transformative industry is a culture of individuals who work towards the common goals of mateship, the prioritisation of safety, and the need to nurture the environment and the surrounding ecosystem.
The South Australian Forest Products Association created the This Is Wood Work campaign to inform school leavers and young professionals about the career opportunities, plus, the generous entry-level salaries and the lifestyle of the Limestone Coast.
One of the most compelling reasons to consider forestry as a career is the level of support for young professionals. Companies offer structured career pathways and programs that invest in employees’ growth, development, and ambition.
Meaning, forestry is not just a smart career move, but an exciting life choice.
Forestry is the career of tomorrow. It offers stability, purpose, opportunity, and the chance to contribute to something much bigger than yourself.
It’s a career that is building our nation, achieving a net-zero future, and producing wood fibre products used in our everyday life.
Wood Work is calling, and we want you to come work with us.
