Countbacks required to separate Attamurra golfers

LAST Saturday saw the running of the October Monthly Medal, sponsored by Jack Jennings Auto Repairs, at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, and even with favourable conditions the course took its toll on most of the 100 players in the field, with only three being able to play below their handicaps.

A countback was needed to determine the winner in A Grade (-9.0 – 10.0) with both Jeff Olafsen (8) and Russell Lewis (10) signing for net 70s.Olafsen came home the stronger shooting a 1 over the card 37 off the stick with two birdies, four pars and three bogies to claim the $40 Club Credit. Lewis also played the back nine well, being theree shots under his handicap with 39 off the stick and earning the $20 Club Credit.

Also with a nett 70 was B Grader (11.0 – 16.0) Peter Collie (16). Collie scored better on the front nine, having 3 under his handicap after scoring 42 off the stick, before having another 44 shots on the back.

Bryan Pink (12) was second with a nett 72. Pink started strongly with two birdies, three pars, three bogies on the first eight holes before a double bogey on the ninth hole. A triple and double bogies on the fourteenth and fifteenth holes tarnished his score.

Max Tollner (19) was the winner in C Grade (17.0 – 45.0) with a net 72, matching his handicap. Tollner was very consistent for the day with scores of 46 on the front and 45 on the back.

Andrew Birks (18) was one shot back from Tollner to be runner up with a nett 73.

Thirty-one additional balls were handed out with players requiring a score of net 78 or better on a countback, there were also nine balls won for birdies on the par 3s.

Pro Shot winner on the eighth hole was Darren Keding (13) collecting 5 balls and Ken Whitehead (10) took out the sixteenth.

OCTOBER 2 RESULTS

The threat of rain reduced the field to just 75 golfers for Thursday stableford competition. The winterly conditions made scoring difficult with only two players being able to better their handicaps.

Henry Forbes (15) won the $70 Pro Shop voucher with 38 points. Forbes round started well compiling 22 points on the front nine, with six pars, two bogies and a solitary double bogey on the par 4 third hole. He continued to add another 16 points on the back nine. The runner ups spot went to Ken Whitehead (9) with 37 points with his round including three birdies on the eighth, ninth and fifteenth holes.

A three-way countback was then required to split the next players all finishing on 36 points. Outgoing club captain Russell Lewis (9) took out five balls, from Chris Lynch (25) four balls, followed by Pat Dempsey (12) with three balls.

Another three-way countback handed Phil Bliss (11) two balls from Alex Rigaux (24) and Terry Janeway (12) all on 35 points. Four other players received a ball for a score of 33 points or better on a countback while eight players received a bonus birdie ball. Roger Gulin (28) took out the nearest to the pin on the eighth hole and Roger Davis (9) won the sixteenth hole.
