A large turnout of 117 players entered August 16’s Stableford competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club, which was the second of two qualifying rounds for the Club Handicap Matchplay event.

In mild but cool conditions some excellent golf scores were posted.

Craig Foster (7) took out A Grade (-9.0 – 10.0) with 41 points. Foster accumulated 19 points on the front nine with 37 shots off the stick.

This was comprised of three bogies, four pars and birdies on the first and ninth holes.

Following on to the back nine, Foster duplicated his 37 off the stick to add 22 more points, with the same make up of three bogies, four pars and birdies, this time on the twelfth and fifteenth holes.

Rob Perryman (8) continued his good Saturday form by taking out second spot with 39 points with splits of 18 and 21 points.

Equal best score of the day went to C Grader (17.0 – 45.0) Cameron Buchanan (33) who also scored 41 points.

Buchanan amassed the most of his points on the outward nine with 24 points, which had pars on both par 3 holes.

This was followed by another 17 points on the inward nine.

Daniel Long (21) was runner up with 38 points, scoring 18 on the front nine followed by 20 on the back nine.

B Grade (11.0 – 16.0) saw Phil Bliss (13) take the win with 40 points.

Bliss had his start with a bang after scoring four points for a birdie on the first hole.

This was followed by four pars, three bogies and a double bogey on the remaining holes for 21 points.

Another 19 points were added on the back made up of six pars, a bogey and two double bogies.

Peppi Pace (14) was second with 37 points.

Like Bliss, Pace scored 21 points on the front nine but had an up and down back nine having three pars, three bogies and three double bogies to score 16 points.

The only other players to better their handicap on the day were Joe Clements (5) and Jake Dempsey (5) both on 37 points.

To win one of the remaining 36 balls players needed a score of 32 points or better on a countback.

Joe Clements (5) won the nearest to the pin on the eighth hole with Stacy Fiegert (5) taking it out on the sixteenth.

After the two qualifying rounds Foster will take out top spot off the 32 who will battle it out over three Sundays in September to determine the outright Handicap Matchplay winner.
