Marks & Easterbrook claim five wicket hauls

February 9, 2024 BY

Emerson Marks has made light work of the North Sportsman’s batting line-up, taking 5/16 from 11 overs as East Gambier put themselves in the box seat in its two-day Barber Shield contest.

North was only able to make 99 and East, despite losing Dion Stratford (17), is well on its way to first innings points sitting a 1/27 at stumps.

After a match to forget the previous round for Penola, at the weekend, the Eagles found their mojo.

In the previous round against East Gambier Penola made 63 across two innings but the top order well and truly got the job done against the South Gambier bowling attack, making 260 with Jack Mullan leading from the front with a well-compiled 74.

Lewis March (39), Drew Clayfield (36) and Michael Waters (32) provided good support and were it not for a damaging spell from Stephen Easterbrook, that saw him claim five Penola scalps, the scoreboard damage could have been worse.

The run chase started shakily for South, finishing 1/7 at stumps.

Mil Lel won the toss in its clash with West and opted to send the Roos in and restricted them to a chaseable 156.

Jack Blackwell top scored with 58, with some late resistance from Sam Coxon (22) also helping make West’s total something the Roos bowlers could defend.

And defend they did, as Mil Lel slumped to 7/39 as Bray Stephenson and ripped through the top order, with good support from Sujith Nikethana – both bowlers finishing with two wickets apiece.

Plenty of highlights in junior ranks as well with Brodie Pfitzner compiling a stunning, unbeaten 112 in O’Donoghue action, smashing the game high total from just 41 balls in an innings that included 11 sixes and eight fours.

Tayte Virtanen was the star with the ball in Hall Trophy action taking an astonishing 5/1 from his four overs.
