THE Castec Rural Supplies Mount Gambier Pioneers Men continue to impress, powering to a 105-73 home court victory against the Waverley Falcons on Anzac Day.

Highly rated recruit Alex Mudronja led the way for the home side after a tightly contested opening quarter that saw the Pioneers only one point clear.

The script totally flipped in the second as the Pioneers upped the ante and by the main break it was a 15 point buffer for the home side.

That lead only continued to grow in the second half for the Pioneers with the advantage getting out to as much as 38 points in the final quarter before they went on to score the 32-point victory.

The victory made it three on the hop for the Mount Gambier team, that shot at an impressive 54 per cent from the field and sees them sit at 5-1 in the early season going.

Mudronja led the charge with 23 points and 11 rebounds, with plenty of help from Austin Shelley finishing with 14 points, four rebounds and four assists, Akech Aliir 14 points, 10 boards and three blocks, Titus Robinson 14 points and 10 rebounds and Kaden Archie 15 points and three assists.

Things were a lot tougher for the OneFortyOne Mount Gambier Pioneers Women on Anzac Day, going down 73-47 to Waverley Falcons at Wulanda.

Both teams entered the clash desperate for some premiership points and the home side started full of promise before a 13-0 run from the Falcons saw the score at 23-13 in the Falcons’ favour at the first change.

The visitors remained in control in the second before blowing the game out of the water in the third to see their advantage at 27 points at the final change.

That extended to a game high 31 points before the reigning NBL1 South champions went on to secure a 26 point win to get their title defence back on track.

The Pioneers are now 1-5 with Haliegh Reinoehl top-scoring with 18 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Jayda Jansen added 14 points and four rebounds, and Cat MacGregor 11 points, four boards and three steals but the stats for the team did not make for pretty reading, shooting at shot 21 per cent from the floor and converting 4/34 from beyond the arc.
