Merrett & Mullan guide Eagles to win
North Sportsman’s 1st innings total of 99 the precious weekend was never going to be enough and second ranked East Gambier easily passed that mark with only three batsmen back in the sheds, going on to compile 194.
Ben Robinson anchored the innings with a patient half century from more than 200 balls and were it not for a damaging 12 over spell from North’s Matthew Robinson, who finished with 4/18, the scoreboard dominance may have been worse.
It has been a case of better late than never for Penola, collecting its first win for the season on the back of Jack Mullan’s batting and an impressive 6/36 from 9.1 overs from Gerry Merrett.
South Gambier never looked like chasing down Penola’s 260 with Sam Bradbrook (34) and Kobi Maxwell (27no.) the only batsmen to show any resistance.
Merrett (pictured) basically ripped through the top order before adding to his five wicket haul with the final wicket of the match and he was even responsible for a run out as well.
Mullan was the other key contributor at the top of the order for the Eagles. His first innings 74 was well-supported by the usual suspects at the top of the order, while in the second innings he smashed an entertaining 60 from 58 balls that included seven boundaries and a six.
At 7/39 at stumps Mil Lel would have held little hope of chasing down West Gambier’s 156 and, in the end, they fell well short, but given the precarious position in which they started day two, it seemed unlikely they would even get within 100 runs.
No one told Darcy Williamson (31) and youngster Harry Hicks, who finished unbeaten on 20, in what would have been a frustrating wagging of the Mil Lel tail.
The green caps ended up all out for 104 with the West bowlers sharing the spoils, before the batsmen went back to work with Bray Stephenson, who was one of the Roos dual wicket takers, notching an unbeaten 47, with Jake Blackwell looking to be finding form at the right time of the season with a well compiled 36.
West’s second innings ended at 4/167 as the Roos look to tune up for finals with a hit out against a resurgent Penola in the final round.
Arguably the highlight of the round was in Cox Bros action where Glencoe’s Darren Vine showed the Gambier Centrals bowling attack mercy, plundering an unbeaten 113 from only 61 balls, finding the boundary six times and clearing it 10 times.
