One-sided run chases in final round of T20
T20 FINAL MINOR ROUND
Thanks to some big hitting from Jack Wight (51) and Alex Hentschke (43no.) East Gambier secured second spot on the T20 ladder, earning a berth in the February 4 semi final.
Wight clubbed 51 from 26 balls, while Hentschke scored his unbeaten 43 from 24 balls as East posted a challenging 4/160 in their final minor round clash with West Gambier.
West was 2/0 in what was a disastrous start to the run chase and while Sam Wilis (38) and Jayden Prior (18) resurrected the innings with a 50 run partnership, the Roos never really recovered and fell 45 runs short.
South Gambier might have won the toss in their clash with North Sportsman’s but that was the last time they were in control of the contest.
South opted for runs on the board but they never really came with Stephen Easterbrook (15) the only batter in the top seven making it to double figures.
It was Nick McInerney (3/34) and Elliot Fisher (3/14) that did the damage with the ball, with Fisher then clubbing 52 not out from 37 to team with Alex Hutton (19no.) to easily reach the target in the 13th over.
Penola might have struggled to find form with the bat in their Barber Shield two day fixture but no such issues in their T20 clash with Mil Lel.
Having restricted Mil Lel to 4/94, Jack Mullan scored an unbeaten 58 from 42 balls and James Alexander was also unbeaten on 34 from 38 balls, as Penola cruised to victory in the 14th over.
Josh Doyle was the hero with the ball for Penola, with 4/13, with Mullan chipping in with two poles before batting his team to victory.
BARBER SHIELD – TWO DAY GAMES
Penola had an outing to forget in its two day clash with East Gambier.
Bowled out for 31 in its first time at bat, the Eagles did recover to restrict East to 92 but having slumped to 4/19 before stumps on day one, it was always going to be an uphill battle and they only made 32 to see East secure the comfortable outright victory.
Marc Roberts picked up four second innings wickets, while Alex Hentschke claimed three.
It was always going to be a tough ask for Mil Lel to chase down North Sportsman’s 4/314 and it proved a bridge too far.
While resistance came from Nick Walkers (52no.), who faced an incredible 243 balls, along with William Rowland (34) and Jack Miller (31), Mil Lel just couldn’t make a dent in the North total, which was so high, in no small part, to Michael Johnston’s day one century.
West Gambier’s declaration at 5/296 proved fortuitous as it secured outright victory over South Gambier, despite the Maroons making a much better fist of their second innings.
Dismissed for 114 in their first innings, South looked up for the fight, as Sam Bradbrook anchored the second innings with a stylish 73, receiving good support from Jakob Opie (33).
But just seven runs shy of making West at least have to bat again, South succumbed – Sujith Nikethana (4/5) was outstanding with the ball for West, while Bray Stephenson was the other chief destroyer, taking 3/49.
