Pioneers sign rising talent

In another exciting signing, the Castec Rural Pioneers have announced that 23-year-old forward Akech Aliir will join the club’s roster in 2024.

Akech is currently a development player at the Adelaide 36ers and played with the North Adelaide Rockets in the NBL1 Central conference last season.

In 18 games in the 2023 NBL1, 204 cm Akech averaged 15.33 points, 11.33 rebounds and 2.83 assists.

Akech is the younger brother of Port Adelaide AFL footballer Aliir Aliir.

Castec Rural Pioneers head coach Richard Hill welcomed the signing of Akech.

“We had Akech in for an off-season camp, and he was very impressive as a player and person,” Hill said. “At 6’9” and with a great basketball IQ, Akech rounds out our squad perfectly

“He’s very skilful and is hungry for success. I look forward to helping him reach his lofty goals.” Hill said.

The Castec Rural Pioneers and OneFortyOne Pioneers are scheduled to play their first game in the 2024 NBL1 South season against Sandringham Sabres on April 6 with their first home game at Wulanda against Frankston Blues on Saturday, April 13.
