Wall-to-wall cricket as season resumes

January 19, 2024 BY

North Sportsman’s allrounder Nick McInerney has put in a man of the match performance to guide his side to an easy victory over South Gambier in cricket’s return to the oval after the festive break.

McInerney was unbeaten on 77 after South won the toss and elected to bowl. He clubbed nine boundaries and cleared the rope once, enjoying good support from veteran Michael Johnston (35) at the top of the order, as well as Elliott Fisher (38).

McInerney then ran through the South batting line-up, taking 4/19 from his eight overs.

Robbie Drenthen was the pick of the South line-up with both bat and ball, top scoring with 21 after taking three wickets. South skipper Stephen Easterbrook did his damage with the ball with 4/21.

East Gambier, on the back of a Riley Flamank half century, and some impressive bowling from skipper Alex Hentschke and Marc Roberts, both who finished with three wickets, easily chased down Mil Lel’s 9/135 to secure victory.

Mil Lel captain Jack Miller was best with bat and ball for his team, top scoring with 27 and taking 3/46.

Once West Gambier posted 7/247 from their 40 overs, it was always going to be a tough ask for Penola and the Eagles fell well short, dismissed for 74 with only Michael Waters (34) giving the scorers much work to do.

Sam Willis tore through the Penola batting line-up with a six over spell that yielded 5/3, adding his five wicket haul to the 67 he made with bat in hand, with Nuwan Gunawardana (71) also doing plenty of damage, with nine fours and a six.

In Crouch Shield action an unbeaten 96 from Jed Matthews (Glencoe) was the highlight, while in Cox Bros Shield Tarpeena number five Alex Carter put on a show with 127 no out in an entertaining hitting display that saw him clear the boundary an incredible 16 times as well as five fours.
