Young proves as consistent as ever

Penola won the toss in its clash with North Sportsman’s at Marist Park and after sending the home side in and dismissing them in the 35th over for only 107, the Eagles would have been well pleased with its place in the contest.

But as North’s lowly total suggested, good bowling combined with the tough batting conditions, was always going to make scoring tough and so it proved as North secured the win by dismissing Penola for 77 in the 33rd over.

Tim Young looks set to be as reliable as ever, taking a game high four wickets, taking two top order scalps and then cleaning up the tail in a six over spell that conceded only nine runs.

Elliott Fisher (2/9) and Mitch Lewis (2/23) chipped in as well and were it not for Lewis March (24) and Mick Waters (24), the Penola scoreboard would have made for even more depressing reading.

Bredon Smart’s 4/11 was the standout in terms of Penola’s bowling attack.

East Gambier made somewhat light work of West Gambier, sending the Roos in on the Malseed Park deck and dismissing the strong batting line-up for 126 in the 34th over.

It started off promisingly with Justin de Jong’s 45 from 40, but it fell away quickly and were it not for a middle order cameo from Sam Hunt (25) the total may have been even less challenging.

It was Emerson Marks doing the damage with 4/18 from his eight overs, dismissing the dangerous Jake Blackwell and Sam Willis cheaply as part of that wicket haul, while Alex Hentschke (2/15) put a stop to any late hitting from Trent Badman and Shane de Jong.

At 3/53, East’s run chase looked a little shaky but Marks and Hentschke combined to rescue the innings with a valuable 51 run stand and then veteran Dion Stratford put the result beyond doubt with a swashbuckling unbeaten half century off only 29 balls, including six boundaries and three sixes.
