District Council of Grant invests in a hearing loop solution to better support those hard of hearing following advice from the Access and Inclusion Advisory Panel.<\/p>\n
At the end of 2023, Council\u2019s Access and Inclusion Advisory Panel recommended action be taken to investigate options for installation of hearing loop technology. Subsequently, Council explored available systems and approved for a multiple function hearing loop solution to be installed at the Council owned and operated Port MacDonnell Community Complex.<\/p>\n
Access and Inclusion Advisory Panel Presiding Member Councillor Katherine Greene said this is a step forward for Council in breaking down barriers associated with participating in community events and engaging with Council.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil is continually improving inclusivity for a range of accessibility requirements which also align with our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan,\u201d Cr Greene said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the Port MacDonnell Community Complex, large print books are available in the library for those with vision impairments, accessible toilets built for those with physical disabilities and now a new hearing loop solution for those with hearing difficulties,\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil and the Access and Inclusion Advisory Panel, together, are committed to ensuring our community is one that is connected and inclusive for residents and visitors.\u201d<\/p>\n
The hearing loop solution comprises two components to improve the hearing experience for all users of the Community Complex. Those include:<\/p>\n
1.\u00a0Infrared hearing loop<\/strong><\/p>\n The infrared hearing loop system transfers sound through a microphone during events at the Community Complex. Sounds are sent to a pendant receiver, provided to Community Complex guests, and transmitted direct to a telecoil function in a hearing device. Those who do not have telecoil connectivity are still able to use the hearing loop system via a pair of lightweight headphones.<\/p>\n The system also links to 24 roof mounted speakers installed across three areas of the Community Complex, youth area, library and art gallery, creating higher quality sound for other audience members. Additionally, audio from the youth area\u2019s television can be transmitted through the infrared hearing loop system during online presentations and trainings.<\/p>\n
