Hamilton Gallery adds to its collection as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations<\/strong><\/p>\n

A remarkable new addition to the Hamilton Gallery collection has been acquired to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Hamilton Gallery Trust. <\/p>\n

Eugene von Gu\u00e9rard\u2019s \u2018Mount Arapiles towards the Grampians\u2019 has not been on public view for the past 152 years. <\/p>\n

Audiences were astounded by the unveiling of this major new acquisition, which was revealed to Hamilton Gallery Trustees and Friends late last month in a special gallery event. <\/p>\n

Artistic director Joshua White conveyed his pride in the new acquisition, and said that the work has an unparalleled local and historical significance. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis painting will be a jewel of our collection. It is not only our first von Gu\u00e9rard painting, adding to the standing of the Hamilton Gallery collection, but it\u2019s a fascinating work capturing an interesting locale, displayed here for the community to admire,\u201d Mr White said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trust and Directors have actively targeted and acquired works to illuminate the unique culture of the Western District, and this is a striking example. This collection is of national and international standing due to the trust\u2019s munificence, and we are beyond grateful for their support.\u201d <\/p>\n

The painting is considered to be one of the artist\u2019s most important, depicting the striking rocky outcrop and the plains of what Major Mitchell termed Australia Felix stretching out towards the Greater Hamilton region. <\/p>\n

Hamilton Gallery trustee Dr Sue Robertson said that the work is a treasure for the gallery and will attract locals and tourists alike. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Trust is very pleased to support this acquisition to mark our 60th anniversary,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cEugene von Gu\u00e9rard is well known as an important early artist in Australia, and we are excited to have our first painting by him added to the Hamilton Gallery collection. It fits well with our other early colonial paintings, such as Chevalier\u2019s Mt Abrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n

A decade ago, the Trust\u2019s 50th anniversary was celebrated with the commission of a tapestry which explored the environment and creatures of the volcanic plains.<\/p>\n

This new work extends our collection back in time to see the Grampians and surrounds through early European eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

In an article written for the Trust\u2019s 60th anniversary publication, art historian and curator Dr Ruth Pullin revealed the fascinating story behind the painting of Mt Arapiles, known as Dyuritte to Traditional Owners of Gariwerd landscapes.<\/p>\n

The artist sketched the view that became the subject of the painting after a two-hour hand- climb up \u201cbroken and fissured rocks\u201d, sheltering from the rain in a rock gorge but noting delight at \u201cmountainside eagles, butterflies [and] flowers\u201d in his diary alongside studies and descriptive notes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe worked \u2018till 6 o\u2019clock\u2019 and was guided back to the station, in darkness, by shots fired by his \u2018worried\u2019 host,\u201d Dr Pullin wrote.<\/p>\n

The work was painted in January 1870 for The Hon. John Alexander MacPherson, during his brief term as the seventh Premier of Victoria. \u201cThe return of von Gu\u00e9rard\u2019s \u2018Mount Arapiles towards the Grampians\u2019 to the public arena brings with it new insights into the life of this politically significant patron, and his own remarkable career as the most adventurous and, arguably, the greatest landscape painter to work in Australia in the nineteenth century,\u201d Dr Pullin said.<\/p>\n

The painting has now been added to the Trust\u2019s 60th anniversary exhibition, Trust: A Generous Legacy on display at Hamilton Gallery until this Sunday.<\/p>\n

One of the oldest and most successful Trusts in Australia, since 1962 the Hamilton Gallery Trust has contributed more than 600 works of art valued at over $4.3 million to the gallery\u2019s internationally renowned collection.<\/p>\n

Visitors can see the new painting alongside 10 major acquisitions per decade of the Trust\u2019s history, spanning paintings, glassware, sculpture, ceramics, metalwork, textiles and works on paper.<\/p>\n
