{"id":11724,"date":"2024-12-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=11724"},"modified":"2024-12-04T15:33:30","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T04:33:30","slug":"students-rub-shoulders-with-australian-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/students-rub-shoulders-with-australian-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Students rub shoulders with Australian of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council (LCYEC) were treated to a special one on one educational session with Dr Richard Harris OAM at Kilsby Sinkhole, when he visited the region last month.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Harris and LCYEC students discussed the importance of water in our region and learnt about the incredible underwater systems slowly and silently flowing beneath our feet. Dr Harris spoke about his adventures and heroic efforts in the Tham Luang cave rescue, as well as providing an interactive diving experience in the local sinkhole.<\/p>\n<p>Witnessing the stunning underwater world of the Kilsby Sinkhole was certainly a highlight!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to snorkel with Dr Harris and learn more about our water systems was very special. Learning about our local landscape and ways we can protect it are very important to me,\u201d said LCYEC student Dylan.<\/p>\n<p>Limestone Coast Landscape Board Educator, Damien Bickley said watching the students embrace the opportunity to hear from an underwater cave diving enthusiast such as Dr Harris and learn more about our amazing underwater world was fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe enthusiasm and energy that the students showed with their questions and interaction is a sign of their ongoing commitment to the local landscape,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Limestone Coast Youth Environment Council students are very passionate about environmental issues in our local landscape.
