Boandik Secures $2.87 Million to Transform Dementia Care in Mount Gambier<\/p>\n
Boandik Lake Terrace is set to become a leader in aged care innovation, securing almost $3million in Federal funding through the Australian Government\u2019s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program (ACCAP).<\/p>\n
The funding will enable a complete redevelopment of the Moore Court section of Boandik Kessal into a purpose-built, dementia-friendly unit designed to provide best-practice care for residents living with dementia.<\/p>\n
The project, which will be constructed within the existing Lake Terrace home, is expected to take 18 months to complete and will ensure Boandik is positioned to meet the growing need for dementia-specific care in the region.<\/p>\n
This $2,870,625 investment is part of the Government\u2019s $250 million commitment to improving aged care in regional, rural, and remote areas.<\/p>\n
Boandik is one of only seven providers in South Australia to secure funding through this highly competitive program, which aims to improve access to quality aged care for underserved communities.<\/p>\n
Boandik CEO Dr. Pamela Alde described the funding as an \u2018historic achievement\u2019 for the organisation and a lifeline for the Mount Gambier community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis grant will enable us to create a purpose-built, dementia-friendly environment designed to provide the highest standard of care,\u201d she said. \u201cDementia care requires a specialised approach, and this redevelopment is about creating a home where residents living with dementia feel safe, respected, and supported.\u201d<\/p>\n
The current Moore Court facility, which was closed in late 2023 due to outdated infrastructure, will undergo a complete transformation. The new unit will provide 11 private rooms with ensuites, modern communal areas, and thoughtful design features tailored to the unique needs of residents living with dementia.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is more than just a renovation,\u201d Dr. Alde said. \u201cIt\u2019s about ensuring that our community has access to the services it desperately needs. The re-development will address a critical shortage of dementia-specific care in Mount Gambier while setting a benchmark for future developments.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the number of people living with dementia rising rapidly across Australia, the redevelopment is timely.<\/p>\n
Currently, approximately 700 people in Mount Gambier are living with dementia, a number projected to grow to 1109 by 2054. Despite this, the region has only 33 dementia-specific beds, leading to long waiting lists and limited access to the specialised care many residents need.<\/p>\n
\u201cFamilies across our region are struggling to find appropriate care for their loved ones,\u201d Dr Alde said. \u201cLong waiting lists and the absence of suitable facilities have placed enormous strain on families and the broader healthcare system. This redevelopment will help close that gap and ensure that older South East Australians receive the specialised support they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minister for Aged Care Anika Wells underscored the importance of this investment.<\/p>\n
\u201cOlder Australians deserve access to safe and quality aged care services – regardless of where they live,\u201d Minister Wells said. \u201cThis funding will help providers like Boandik deliver modern, home-like environments that prioritise dignity, safety, and cultural care.\u201d<\/p>\n
The redeveloped Moore Court will also feature design elements that promote a calming and supportive environment, such as natural lighting, clear wayfinding, and sensory gardens. These enhancements are designed to improve care outcomes and enhance the quality of life for residents living with advanced dementia.<\/p>\n
\u201cDementia-friendly facilities are essential for the future of aged care,\u201d Ms. Alde said. \u201cThis project will ensure that Boandik remains at the forefront of dementia care, providing the services that our community needs now, and in the years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
