{"id":13328,"date":"2025-04-06T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-05T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=13328"},"modified":"2025-04-02T15:59:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T04:59:13","slug":"your-chance-to-help-our-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/your-chance-to-help-our-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"Your chance to help our researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CITIZEN science benefits biodiversity by providing researchers with valuable insights into the distribution, abundance and persistence of South Australia\u2019s unique plant and animal species, and other indicators of environmental change.<\/p>\n<p>National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is celebrating the work of citizen scientists this month and encouraging people to head to their local park and get involved.<\/p>\n<p>As part of its April Park of the Month program and coinciding with Citizen Science Month, NPWS is promoting events and quality resources to create the perfect opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to participate in this vital work.<\/p>\n<p>Citizen science \u2013 which can involve activities such as recording frog noises or taking photos of different species \u2013 enables everyone to contribute to environmental science and research.<\/p>\n<p>Department for Environment and Water community and nature partnerships Manager Helen Donovan said South Australia\u2019s national parks and reserves housed an incredible diversity of animals and plants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have gathered all you will need to become a citizen scientist \u2013 whether it be attending an event, independently recording plant or animal sightings, or improving your knowledge with online resource \u2013 you can satisfy your enquiring mind and explore,\u201d Dr Donovan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe great thing about citizen science is that you don\u2019t need a science background or technical knowledge to make significant contributions to important environmental research and monitoring. Often, you just need a keen eye and a mobile phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the citizen science workshops being held in South Australia\u2019s network of parks and reserves this April include an ethical photography and iNaturalist workshop in Naracoorte South Primary School and Naracoorte Conservation Park \u2013 presented by the Friends of Bool and Hacks Lagoons and the Native Orchid Society of South Australia<\/p>\n<p>Resources, including a guide to iNaturalist to help budding citizen scientists excel at data collection, are also available.<\/p>\n<p>These events, resources and more are available on the Park of the Month website: <a href=\"https:\/\/parks.sa.gov.au\/get-inspired\/park-of-the-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/parks.sa.gov.au\/get-inspired\/park-of-the-month<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People can find citizen science projects to get involved in year-round through the SciStarter Australia website: <a href=\"https:\/\/scistarteraustralia.au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/scistarteraustralia.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CITIZEN science benefits biodiversity by providing researchers with valuable insights into the distribution, abundance and persistence of South Australia\u2019s unique plant and animal species, and other indicators of environmental change.
