{"id":13514,"date":"2025-04-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-19T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=13514"},"modified":"2025-04-17T12:36:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-17T02:36:51","slug":"following-in-freds-footsteps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/following-in-freds-footsteps\/","title":{"rendered":"Following in Fred&#8217;s footsteps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Fred Hollows Foundation has opened nominations for the annual Fred and Humanity Awards, which recognise Australians who make a real difference in their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2012 as the Humanity Awards, The Foundation has celebrated more than 3000 compassionate Year 6 students from across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the Fred Awards were introduced, which recognises adults who care for others in a decent, practical and no-nonsense way.<\/p>\n<p>The Fred and Humanity Awards celebrate the legacy and down-to-earth humanitarian spirit of eye doctor Fred Hollows, opening for nominations on what would have been Fred\u2019s 96th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Founding director Gabi Hollows said the Fred and Humanity Awards are a testament to Fred&#8217;s deep faith in the goodness of everyday Australians. He would be incredibly proud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe invite you to nominate a friend, family member or colleague in this year\u2019s Fred and Humanity Awards,\u201d Gabi said. \u201cWe all know someone who makes the world a better place and deserves to be celebrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A judging panel led by Gabi Hollows will shortlist a group of finalists who will be put to a public vote, from which the 2025 Fred Hollows Humanitarian will be decided.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation will also select a group of Year 6 Junior Ambassadors.<\/p>\n<p>The Foundation\u2019s corporate partner Specsavers supports the Humanity Awards and Fred Awards by donating $50,000 on behalf of the Junior Ambassadors and Humanitarian of the Year to The Foundation\u2019s work to end avoidable blindness globally.<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 South Australian Junior Ambassador to The Foundation and Humanity Award winner was Mia Hart from St John the Apostle Primary School.<\/p>\n<p>Mia was recognised for embodying community spirit and ensuring everyone feels welcome and included at school.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, The Foundation named audiologist Vi Bui as Humanitarian of the Year and recipient of the Fred Award for her work providing free hearing care to refugees, migrants and people experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can all make a difference, we can make the world a better place,\u201d Vi said.<\/p>\n<p>In South Australia, The Foundation partners with several organisations to improve access to eye care in regional areas, including the A\u1e49angu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands.<\/p>\n<p>The Fred and Humanity Awards are open for nominations until Friday, July 18.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more and nominate at <a href=\"http:\/\/hollows.org\/awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hollows.org\/awards<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Fred Hollows Foundation has opened nominations for the annual Fred and Humanity Awards, which recognise Australians who make a real difference in their communities.
