AN inspiring group of volunteers in Portland is changing lives one kit at a time.<\/p>\n
Days4Girls Portland, supported by the United Way Glenelg Lewis Court Fund, is on track to deliver 1,250 sustainable feminine hygiene kits in 2025. These thoughtfully made kits allow girls and women to manage their menstrual cycle with dignity, helping them stay in school, work, and daily life.<\/p>\n
Recently, 300 kits were sent to Papua New Guinea via the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, and another 250 to the Philippines, where they support women living on rubbish dumps. Local benefactors in the Philippines have covered transport costs and help provide education and training alongside the kits.<\/p>\n
Closer to home, kits are also reaching vulnerable women through a new partnership with The Salvation Army Mt Gambier and Goods360 for distribution.<\/p>\n
Days4Girls kits aren\u2019t just packs\u2014they\u2019re dignity, opportunity, and education in a bag. They allow girls to continue attending school and women to move about freely, regardless of their menstrual cycle. Each kit is carefully sewn to international standards, and before any are dispatched, they are trialled and quality-checked under strict guidelines.<\/p>\n
Volunteer Team Leader Di Burch, whose home hosts up to 18 volunteers weekly, says the project is powered by people of all ages and backgrounds.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re a diverse, welcoming group, with some volunteers working from home and others attending regular sewing days. The impact goes far beyond the kits. It\u2019s about connection, learning, and giving back,\u201d Mrs Burch said.<\/p>\n
With more than 30 active volunteers and no paid staff, Days4Girls Portland continues to grow its reach.<\/p>\n
United Way Glenelg Executive officer Nicole Carr said the project reflects the values of equity and wellbeing that sit at the heart of United Way Glenelg.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s extraordinary to see a grassroots initiative in Glenelg Shire creating such a global ripple effect. These kits empower women and girls, reduce stigma, and strengthen community through volunteerism and care,\u201d Ms Carr said.<\/p>\n
How can you help? Days4Girls Portland is currently seeking donations of 100% dark-coloured cotton fabric (no light colours) and new face washers.<\/p>\n
