{"id":14101,"date":"2025-05-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/?p=14101"},"modified":"2025-05-26T09:26:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T23:26:29","slug":"shining-a-light-on-the-dairy-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/mtgambiertimes\/news\/shining-a-light-on-the-dairy-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Shining a light on the dairy industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 150 farmers and dairy industry stakeholders are expected to gather at The Barn, Mount Gambier on Wednesday, May 28, for the 2025 DairySA Innovation Day, a major event for South Australia\u2019s dairy sector.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s program focuses on the theme \u2018Cows and Carbon Can Be Friends.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The program explores the complex relationship between dairy farming and climate change, with a clear goal to turn carbon-related challenges into practical, profitable on-farm opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>The event will showcase science backed insights proving that sustainability and productivity are not mutually exclusive, they\u2019re mutually reinforcing.<\/p>\n<p>The day will feature leading national and international experts delivering practical knowledge across topics such as carbon emissions, soil health, genetics, forage systems and regenerative farming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key speakers include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Tanisha Shields, Rabobank \u2013 Examining how emissions data impacts supply chains and market access.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Anouk van Breukelen, Wageningen University \u2013 Presenting research into breeding low-methane dairy cattle.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dr Anna Thomson, Agriculture Victoria \u2013 Exploring climate-smart pasture systems through the Resilient Forages project.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A panel of progressive farmers including Andrew Jenkins and Reggie &amp; Lachie Davis, sharing firsthand insights on regenerative practices.<\/p>\n<p>Breakout sessions will provide deeper exploration into emerging methane reduction technologies, data-driven soil management and pasture research. Professor Paul Wood AO will outline international investment and innovation in methane mitigation, including developments in vaccines, feed additives and genetics.<\/p>\n<p>The day also includes a TAFE graduation ceremony, updates from key industry bodies and a look at the upcoming Young Dairy Network Ireland Tour.<\/p>\n<p>The event concludes with a networking dinner and discussion, where attendees will hear Professor Paul Wood AO tackle the provocative question \u2018What does an alternative protein taste like?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 DairySA Innovation Day offers a unique opportunity for farmers, researchers, and industry leaders to come together and explore real-world solutions for a climate-resilient, productive dairy future.
